Wellspring’s spring concert of dance draws on movement, technology, and shared experience to explore how we break—and rebuild—connection.
KALAMAZOO, MI, April 29, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ — Wellspring’s Spring Concert of Dance, Rebuilding the Fractured Entanglement, premieres May 15–17 at the Cori Terry Theatre in the Epic Center, 359 S. Kalamazoo Mall, Suite 204, in downtown Kalamazoo. This original, evening-length work by Artistic Director Marisa Bianan and Technical Director Samantha Snow brings dance into conversation with cutting-edge technology in a powerful collaboration with Kevin Abbott, director of Western Michigan University’s Virtual Imaging Technology Lab (VITAL), and costume designer Maddie Nelson.
The work explores connection: how it holds, how it breaks, and what it takes to rebuild it. Inspired in part by the idea of quantum entanglement—the phenomenon in which particles remain linked across distance—the performance translates that concept into human terms, asking what it means to stay connected in a fractured world.
“We live in a time when technology places endless knowledge and experience at our fingertips, yet paradoxically can deepen our sense of isolation,” said Bianan. “While technology can inform and inspire us, it cannot understand us in the way another human can. At our core, we seek to be understood. Rebuilding the Fractured Entanglement is a call to reconnect, an invitation for people to strive toward greater understanding and compassion for one another. Our existences are inherently entangled, designed to intersect and intertwine.”
A Program Rooted in Place and Alive With Possibility
This premiere reflects a deeply collaborative process shaped over time. Bianan and Snow began developing the work in 2022, building a shared vision inspired by a desire to create an evening-length premiere developed within close collaboration and connection.
A key partner in that process was Abbott of WMU’s VITAL. The integration of virtual imaging technology expands and responds to the movement onstage, deepening both the visual and kinetic experience. Nelson’s costume designs work to connect those elements further, with each material and structural choice designed to move seamlessly between body and projection.
“A key part of the process is our partnership with Western Michigan University’s Virtual Imaging Technology Lab and costume designer Maddie Nelson,” Bianan said. “Each choice—every line, cut, and material—is carefully considered to ensure a seamless, organic connection with the choreography and projections. Working with a collective vision has strengthened the whole, and trusting that instinct continues to drive the process.”
An Invitation to Experience and Participate
Come as you are, and come along for the adventure. This is not a linear story, but a shared experience, one that moves through tension and toward connection.
Friday’s performance includes a post-concert talkback with collaborators, offering audiences a closer look at the creative process. On Saturday afternoon, audiences of all ages have the option to purchase an expanded ticket that includes a pre-concert experience, offered in partnership with the Air Zoo Aerospace & Science Center, that expands the themes of exploration and discovery.
The Cori Terry Theatre is wheelchair accessible and offers hearing loop assistive listening technology. With both afternoon and evening performances, Wellspring makes it easy to experience this bold new work.
