The $2,500 award will help Michel pursue a finance degree at the University of Maryland.

DALLAS, TX, November 16, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ — It is well known that distracted driving causes a high number of car accidents across the nation. With the advent of smartphones, texting quickly became the leading cause of distractions among drivers. That’s why personal injury law firm Loncar Lyon Jenkins created the Distraction-Free Driving PSA Scholarship.

This year, Annika Pierre Michel takes home the $2,500 prize. Her winning entry, which is available to watch on YouTube, captures the viewer’s attention by starting out with an intense car crash. Then, statistics about texting and driving quickly scroll past. Finally, the video ends with a few tips for how to combat distracted driving, such as using hands-free devices.

In an interview with Loncar Lyon Jenkins representatives, Michel remarked on the information she learned during the course of creating her PSA. “The main thing I learned,” she said, “is that a lot of us think [car wrecks due to distracted driving] is something that only happens to others.” Instead, the project showed her that these tragedies can happen to anyone. The statistics don’t lie, and nearly half of all teenage drivers admit to texting while behind the wheel.

Annika Michel currently attends the University of Maryland, College Park, where she studies finance. “I might want to be a financial advisor or a financial analyst,” Michel said when asked about her future. Though creating a PSA may seem a far cry from the financial world, the issue of distracted driving affects everyone, she told representatives in an interview.

Loncar Lyon Jenkins is happy to award Michel the $2,500 award for her work bringing this important issue to the public.
